Please support The Detroit College Promise, our Kalamazoo Promise-like program to repopulate Detroit and improve the Detroit Public Schools by giving financial incentives, in the form of scholarships, simply for living in Detroit and enrolling in a DPS school.

Students register online for The Detroit College Promise or complete a one page application. They pledge to stay in school, be the best student they can be, and when successful, return to DPS to help other students.  In 9th grade or earlier, we present them with a scholarship certificate, to emphasize that they have already been successful in their first college related activity. We also provide them Letters of Encouragement from President Obama, Governor Granholm and others who value education, as well as small gift items from colleges and universities, so they become comfortable with the idea of higher education. Currently, over 12,000 DPS students have registered.

When students graduate, we give them a gift package of donated items, an invitation to a pizza party, and if they attend a Michigan public college or university within 10 years of high school graduation, we send the institution money to apply to the students’ tuition.

You can help by:

(3) Writing a letter of encouragement to motivate these students, link, samples

(4) Click here to make a tax deductible contribution of $5 or more. Be part of our campaign to increase our incentive award to $10,000 per student ($2500 per year for 4 years).  Due to sponsors who pay all of our expenses, 100% of your donation will be allocated for tuition for our students.  Knowing that there is a financial incentive waiting for them when they graduate motivates DPS students to try harder, and motivates families to enroll in DPS and make the school system stronger.
