Make a Difference!   Write a Letter of Encouragement to a Detroit Public School Student!

Bingham Farms, Michigan – March 18, 2010 - The Detroit College Promise has launched its first Letter of Encouragement Campaign. The purpose of the letters is to give Detroit Public High School freshmen who have registered to receive a Detroit College Promise Scholarship a glimpse of what a professional life might be like, and let them know that many people just like them have had to overcome major challenges to succeed.  The letters are intended to give the students assurance that they are not alone, that there are others who have walked the same path and made it.  They provide the students confidence that there are people who believe in them and that they need to believe in themselves.

The Detroit College Promise is unique in that it awards scholarship certificates to high school students in the 9th grade.  The certificates create early college awareness and the organization supports students in attaining their college goal.  Each month, the students and their parents/guardians are informed, by newsletter, where they can obtain academic assistance, what they have to do to increase their readiness for college, and what mentoring, leadership and other scholarship programs are available.  An in-school liaison works with students who need additional support, and rewards are given for achievement and overcoming challenges.

“It’s not just another scholarship program,” says Nat Pernick, MD, Executive Director.  “The goal is to give students and their parents an incentive to demand educational excellence and to raise the expectation that every Detroit Public School student can go to college.”

The Detroit College Promise is asking everyone in Southeast Michigan to show a Detroit Public School student that someone believes in them, by taking 15 minutes out of their day to write a Letter of Encouragement.  This includes elected officials, CEOs, professionals from all disciplines, Detroit Public School administration, staff and alumni, and anyone with a passion for improving Detroit.  For more information, go to, click on Links and then Letter of Encouragement.

The Detroit College Promise is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization modeled on the well known and successful Kalamazoo Promise.  Its goal is to raise the expectation that every student in the Detroit Public Schools can go to college by offering scholarships to all DPS students.  This will help revitalize the City, its economic future and the economy of Michigan.
