The Detroit College Promise announces
the expansion of its scholarship program
to Frederick Douglass College Preparatory High School
20 April 2009: The Detroit College Promise, a tax exempt charity modeled on the Kalamazoo Promise, announces the expansion of its scholarship program to the Frederick Douglass College Preparatory High School in Detroit. The Detroit College Promise scholarship program is currently in place at Cody High School, with 138 seniors in this year’s program. Next year, there will be an estimated 500 students from both schools in the program.
Sean D. Vann, Principal of Frederick Douglass, indicated that “The Detroit College Promise will be a valuable asset for students and staff.” Frederick Douglass is an all male high school within the Detroit Public Schools (DPS), at the site of the former Murray Wright High School. It offers a college preparatory curriculum for young males, with an emphasis on mathematics, science, technology and leadership development.
The Detroit College Promise scholarship program encourages DPS students to attend college and improve their academic performance by reducing financial barriers to college. It is intended for all DPS seniors who live in Detroit and attend high schools where it is in place. There are no academic or financial aid requirements, and the application takes only a few minutes to complete.
The Detroit College Promise also requires students to fill out the federal financial aid (FAFSA) form, and estimates that the majority of DPS students will receive grants that pay for most, if not all, of their college tuition. At Cody and Frederick Douglass high schools, The Detroit College Promise will also contribute up to $500 per year, if needed, towards undergraduate tuition at Michigan public colleges and universities.
Dr. Nat Pernick, Executive Director of The Detroit College Promise, indicated that the charity intends to operate at all DPS high schools within a few years. “We believe that The Detroit College Promise will achieve similar results as the Kalamazoo Promise, and will help repopulate and reenergize the Detroit Public Schools and the City of Detroit.
