To provide each Detroit Public Schools (DPS) graduate with the opportunity to attend college with up to a 100% tuition scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY
All students who graduate from DPS, and have been DPS students for four years or more while residing in the City of Detroit (enrollment and residency must be continuous).
Admitted to and enrolled at any public State of Michigan university or community college.
a. Make regular progress toward a degree or certification.
b. Maintain a 2.0 grade point average or above.
c. Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
d. If the GPA drops below 2.0, a student may be reinstated by taking classes, NOT paid for by The Detroit College Promise, to bring it back to at least 2.0.
EXTENT OF BENEFITS
The tuition benefit will be graduated based on the length of attendance in DPS while a Detroit Resident:
This scholarship program provides up to four years of tuition and mandatory fees for college, as indicated by the scale above. Four years is defined as the receipt of a bachelors degree or 130 credit hours towards a degree, whichever occurs first. The student must take at least 12 credit hours per semester. Summer school classes are NOT covered. Mandatory fees are defined using the same definition as the Michigan Educational Trust and are determined by each educational institution. The program will only pay for courses within 10 years of the date of high school graduation. Exceptions to this requirement are granted for military service.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship recipients must submit:
A Detroit College Promise application form.
A DPS high school transcript documenting attendance at a DPS High School and Detroit Residency.
A DPS transcript or report card documenting attendance at a DPS middle school, elementary school or kindergarten.
A Detroit College Promise scholarship acceptance form. • After each college semester is completed, a transcript from the previous semester indicating the classes taken, grades and credit hours for those classes and cumulative GPA. This can also be submitted by the college.
Changes to contact information (home and school address, telephone number, email address) as they occur.
DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
All funds will be paid directly to the college or university. No funds will be paid to students, parents or the Detroit Public Schools. Funds will be paid a maximum of twice per year. Payments will be made after the drop/add period of the fall and winter semester as defined by each educational institution, generally at the same time that Michigan Educational Trust Funds are billed. Any refunds will be paid directly to The Detroit College Promise.
EXCEPTIONS
No exceptions will be made unless approved by The Detroit College Promise Board, its Appeals Committee or its designee. Appeals are initiated by contacting the Detroit College Promise Executive Director.
