This is our monthly general email about The Detroit College Promise, whose mission is to motivate Detroit students to make education a priority.  We encourage all K-8 students in DPS to sign up today by visiting www.DetroitCollegePromise.org, then click on Student Login, then New Student sign-up.  If you are not part of DPS, now is the time to reconsider.

Conversation with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rabbi Daniel Syme

The Detroit College Promise (DCP) in partnership with the Rainbow PUSH & Citizenship Education Fund and the Detroit Historical Museum Black Historic Sites Committee presents a conversation with Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. and Rabbi Daniel Syme Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 6:30 pm.

 

Join Reverend Jackson, a living legend and one of the iconic figures of the Civil Rights movement, and Temple Beth El Rabbi Syme, the first rabbi ever inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College, in a dynamic discussion on changes, challenges and possibilities in our community.

Workshop: Scholarships and More

This workshop gives a quick overview of WMU's new student scholarships, Lee Honors College, and an opportunity to pick up the Community Scholarship Initiative Book. There will be on site admissions with a waived application fee for students who bring their official transcript and ACT score. A light dinner will be served. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by Friday, January 25 to doreen.odom@wmich.edu.

Workshop: How to Pay for College: Financial Aid and More
Monday, February 4, 6 - 8 pm
DSTDFI Building, 24760 W. 7 Mile Rd., Detroit, MI 48219

This workshop for high school juniors, seniors and their parents will explore how to apply for FASFA, State of Michigan assistance, and private bank loans. A light dinner will be served. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by Thursday, Feb. 1 to doreen.odom@wmich.edu.


Teachers Are Key

Tom Watkins, Michigan's former State Superintendent of Schools, wrote a great article about the importance of teachers.  Teachers truly are an impetus for the advancement of this nation.  It is imperative that we esteem and encourage America's educators, as the students they influence today will become the leaders of tomorrow.  Read the article here.

tremendous opportunity to give back to Detroit students on Monday, January 21, 2013.  In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, DPS schools request DPS alumni and supporters to volunteer for opportunities spanning from beautification projects to student enrichment programs.

Diplomas 2 Degrees is offering a great college readiness event with a wide variety of presentations on topics such as FAFSA, college preparation, scholarships, admissions, and resumes.  It is strongly recommended that parents attend with their student and everyone is encouraged to wear a shirt from their favorite college.  There will be food, fun, and a special parent raffle.  You don't want to miss this event!  Call (313) 523 - 4540 with any questions.
