August 2011

This is our monthly general email about The Detroit College Promise. For the class of 2011, we gave out 127 scholarships.  Our maximum award was $500 for 1 year at any Michigan public college
or university.  We plan to increase the award to $500 for 2 years for the class of 2012, 3 years for
the class of 2013 and 4 years for the class of 2014.  Beginning with the class of 2015, we hope to
increase the award to $2500 per year for 4 years, or $10,000 total.  Students have 10 years from
graduation to use the scholarship.  We also help students obtain other grants; for the 2010-11
college year, our university students received an average of $9,729 in other grants. We encourage K-9 students in DPS to sign up today (visit, then click on Student Login, then New student signup).

our voiceTaking Back Our Schools

We have been asking people in the community to tell us how the Detroit College Promise is making a difference. Below is just some of the feedback we have received.

"Congratulations, the word is getting out; now, I guess as they say, "the real work begins." I am very encouraged about the future of DPS with Detroit College Promise a pivotal focal point. NOW, it's up to us educators to deliver. I am committed to getting the word out and bringing those students back. I believe it is important the public know that the more years their children are with DPS, the more scholarship dollars they will receive. I will continue to use The Detroit College Promise Scholarships, and all other resources at my disposal, to convince families that The Detroit Public Schools are on the rise. I feel we are the Miami Heat of the NBA. We have recruited the best players in the game; now, all we have to do is WIN! When we win, my students win; and, I know, that's why you are in this, too! Let's rally the team, this fall." - Joseph Rogers, DPS School Guidance Counselor

Help Clean Up Cody-DIT High School

Cody DIT is in need of volunteers on Saturday August 27 to finish the entrance way project for CODY DIT High School, and to do general clean up. This summer, the United Way and the AFT assisted Cody summer school students and faculty, under the guidance of the East Michigan Environmental Action Council, to finish the "Garden of Energy" in front of the new building entrance. A few items remain to be done including general clean-up, planting flowers, laying bricks and painting the fašade and doors. CODY DIT could also use some help from any person familiar with masonry, to fix the concrete steps in front.

These are the times during which volunteers are needed:
