May 2011

This is our monthly general email about The Detroit College Promise. We offer financial incentives in the form of scholarships to all current Detroit Public School students to attend Michigan public colleges and universities. For the 2010-2011 college year (we were at only 6 high schools), we issued 33 scholarships. For the students who completed our paperwork, the average amount received for grants was $9,965 for those attending a university and $5,050 for those attending a community college; 64% had grants that paid 100% of their tuition.  We encourage K-8 students in DPS to sign up today (visit www.DetroitCollegePromise.org, then click on Student Login, then New student signup).

Charter One Bank Makes Generous Donation To Our Senior Gift Packages

We'd like to thank LaVenia Vann, Branch Sales Manager, Michigan Central Office of Charter One, for donating mouse pads, notepads and key chains to give to our graduating seniors attending college next fall, as part of our gift package.

Remember, your business can help too! We are always looking for items to include in our gift packs to seniors. If you know of anyone that has extra items they'd be willing to donate, please contact us. Items include T-shirts or other clothing, gift cards, office supplies, electronics, or anything useful to new college students. We would be able to arrange a time to pick up any items that you have.

Volunteers Needed To Help With Community Event

On Saturday, May 21, 2011, we are seeking volunteers who want to man a booth and represent The Detroit College Promise. The event is being presented by the Community Resource Forum, "Bringing Resources To Your Community, You Have Questions...We Have Answers. " The event will take place from 10:00am to 4:00pm, at the Considine Little Rock Family Life Center, located at 8904 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202, next to the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church.

The event is meant to provide the residents of the Central Woodward Neighborhoods and the City of Highland Park, available resources from various non-profits, for profit companies, the City of Detroit, Wayne County and the state of Michigan, that they would not otherwise be available. If you are able to help, please call us at 248-646-3269, and let us know what hours you would be able to attend.
